OUR CHURCH HISTORY
Crossroads Missionary Baptist Church was organized on November 12, 1983, under the leading of the Holy Spirit, and through the leadership of Pastor Jesse F. Hayward. With him were 13 loyal members who’s love for the LORD and His work and Word, wanted to build a body of born again believers (a local assembly), that was rooted and grounded in the truth of GOD’S Word. The forming of our body took place on Wednesday, November 8, 1983.
Our first full worship and church home was at the home of James and Mary Taylor, 3246 Etting Street. Our stay there was a short one because of the increase that GOD had added unto us. The body (the Church), then moved to 58th and Walnut Street in Southwest Philadelphia, where we worshiped for about six months.
After much discussion the church family decided to move our church to 61 E. Penn Street where we could have both a home for our pastor’s family and a place of worship for our church family. We remained there for approximately two years with many ups and downs. Through it all by Faith, we waited on the LORD and trusted the leading of the Blessed Holy spirit. Others came to our little basement church, so much so that we had no place to turn. Once the worship began, where you found yourself is where you stayed throughout the worship. We had outgrown our building once again. Fasting and praying, praying and fasting “LORD, show us the place.” All the things that had been accomplished were done by GOD using ordinary people. Because of people “yielding” themselves to the Holy Spirit of GOD and giving their time, talent and tithes, and much prayer, the LORD blessed us with the building at 2219-23 W. Allegheny Avenue.
The LORD has brought us a long way. He will through us, build a house set apart for the Master. Our church family grew because the LORD remained the center of our church. Pastor Jessy Hayward gave his heart to GOD and to the people he served. On Tuesday, September 12, 1995, the LORD called him home.
Pastor John A. Johnson who was our assistant pastor, became our interim pastor for a year. On September 22, 1996 Pastor Johnson was installed as our new senior pastor. Along with continuing with the ministries that were already established Pastor Johnson established new ministries to help people to grow in the grace and knowledge of our LORD and SAVIOR, as well as, ministries to worship and glorify GOD, also outreach ministries to evangelize the lost and meet the needs of the people in the community. We are excited about what the LORD has in store for us as a local branch of Zion for the future. LORD we’re available to you!
